My favorite Ficklesticks story occurred at school when I was wearing a multi-colored 3-daisy necklace with a mostly white outfit. At the end of each school day, I stand in the hallway near the classroom where I subbed, watching students head towards the exits. As the rush clears, there are a handful of elementary students who appear in the halls because they have a parent who works at the Jr./Sr. High School. On this particular afternoon, an elementary student (first grader, I think) was coming down the hall with his older sister. I had just met this child’s father earlier in the day. He had shared with me his young son had been through several surgeries for his eyes. As this child is approaching my location, he is pointing to me and asking his sister, “What’s that? What’s that?” I lean down to talk to him and I realize he’s pointing at the daisy necklace. He touches it as I tell him I am wearing a ‘daisy flower’ necklace. This child—with limited eyesight—was drawn to the necklace’s beautiful colors and shape. As am I.
